Thank-you for supporting your student this week at Learner Conferences. These conferences set intention for the importance of our school work this year at GreenWood. Your vision for your student's success helps unify the work of our school year and gives purpose to our work of building authentic experiences for our students. We still have a few students who did not have parents participate with them. Please respond to your teacher's request TODAY to arrange for a conference this upcoming week.

Your feedback is shared with our Academic Excellence Crew to review our effectiveness and help us get better at serving you!

YEARBOOK! GreenWood has an amazing yearbook- one that plants a tree for every yearbook purchased! We showcase our HEALTH Values, each of our Crews, their fieldwork, expeditions and celebrations. Parents also are able to create 2 personalized pages of their own pictures for no additional charge! Purchase before September 30th to receive a 15% discount. See the attached flyer for information about purchasing a discounted yearbook! The deadline for the discount is September 30th.

MISSION POSSIBLE: Wednesday is our first Forest Crew of the year, and our launch of this year's reading challenge: Mission Impossible. Students, teachers AND family members earn a leaf for every book they read, and for each weekly challenge they complete. Keep your students excited about reading, and be sure to add your leaf to our parent/family member reading bucket in the office. (Mrs. Stewart is working on a huuuuge tree for our Main Hall for us to grow with our reading leaves!)

  • Reading Horizons: Help your student with their reading at home. We have adopted a schoolwide curriculum to support reading achievement with our students this year, and we need your help!

Cultural Family Opportunities:

  • FREE Ogden Hispanic Festival- TOMORROW from 2PM - 8 PM for the third year in a row, the Ogden Hispanic Festival (OHF) will highlight the culture, history, education, music, dance, and gastronomy of the Latino community. Last year's event was a rousing success, with an attendance of over 1000 people. This year the event will be even more successful with an expected crowd of 1,500 to 2,000.This year's theme is "Civic Engagement & Culture, the Path to Education and Success." The OHF is a free event, open to the public, located at 2501 Wall Ave Ogden, Ut 84401.
  • FREE Utah Brazilian Festival- The premier Brazilian event of the year is coming to Orem (575 E University Pkwy) Saturday September 15th, 1-7PM. There will be food, dancing, a Samba parade and so much more! Bring a few dollars for food or to donate!
  • FREE Festa Italiana- On Sat Sept 9/15 12PM - 10PM, and Sun Sept 9/16 12PM - 7PM. A celebration of the culture, entertainment, and culinary diversity of Italy. Admission is FREE. During the two day festival, highlights include live Italian entertainment from Italy and around the world. Also enjoy, local food booths (15) highlighting the regions of Italian cuisine, Italian wine, arts & crafts, historical displays, live raffles, exotic Italian cars and much more.
  • Festival of India- On Saturday September 15th the Krishna Temple (8628 South State Road
  • Storytelling Night at Canyon Rim Park - Some say storytelling is the original form of entertainment. When humans first gathered around a camp fire, the art of storytelling evolved. Contrasted to those prehistoric nights, our storytelling night will be held in the safety of an outdoor amphitheater at Canyon Rim Park (3100 S 2900 E Salt Lake City, UT 84109) on Sept 16th at 8:15 PM Our storytellers will share a piece of their lives, allowing us to connect with the most precious human emotions. If you'd like to prepare yourself for stories, feel free to listen to "The Moth" storytelling podcast.
  • Fairytale Festival: Something magical is coming to Centerville, Utah! Back by popular demand, CenterPoint Legacy Theatre is pleased to announce the 6th annual Fairytale Festival to be held at the Theatre on September 14th and 15th, 2018.
  • A special music concert: Bonneville Chamber Music Festival designed for families and their developmentally disabled loved ones to enjoy themselves while listening to live music played by extraordinary musicians. The concert provides a welcoming environment for attendees to interact with artists along with a safe space for spontaneous vocalizations, hand flapping, rocking or other types of body movements from our autistic audience.

It is looked forward to by people all across the state and attendees from neighboring states- the largest free custom car show in the Western United States with over 900 cars on display. Party Rock Project will be performing a free concert on Saturday, September 8th at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Street Stage.
  • Little Adventures Fall Outlet Sale- Little Adventures is having a SALE! Just in time for Halloween time! This year we will be doing two sales. A local sale in Sandy at the Mountian America Expo Center Sept 5-8.

It was an important week for learning at GreenWood. We are keeping our Crew Norms, planning with purpose and supporting student response with clarity and relationship-building Crews. Thank-you for supporting our work with your commitments to healthy habits, safe drop-off and pick-ups and reading with your sweet children each night! Next week we begin our baseline DIBELS Testing to see how are students have grown since last year. We want them to do their best, so please get a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast and a big squishy hug!

A reminder to send lunch foods that can fuel students for learning and an active day. Be thoughtful as you consider choosing whole foods, good carbs and healthy proteins for student lunches. Sugar can have a negative impact on student energy in the afternoon, so consider this a "sometimes food."

  • Mrs. Stewart would appreciate your help with the following art donations: Black fine tip and ultra fine tip sharpies, Pink erasers, Glue sticks, Liquid glue, Washable markers, Paper towels, Cardstock paper (or any cool paper), (Also anyone's old acrylic paints will find a happy home in the art room.)

 WEEK at GreenWood: Aug 20-25

GreenWood Family Suns,

Do you feel that? The energy growing at GreenWood this first week of school was palpable! Our Teacher Trees have worked through the Summer planning, preparing and setting intention for a year engaging our students in learning with purpose! WOW! This has been an awesome week! Already, our students have been recognized nearly 500 times in Early and Middle Groves and 628 in Upper Grove for following our norms! Upper Grove Crews are competing against each other for a Grove Party this month- currently Miss Florence is in the lead with 234 tickets- in just 4 days of school!

Families- you were in on it, too! We have nearly 4 pages of volunteer logs in the office to enter into Compass! You helped us with crossing, recess, classroom and the needed math lamination cutting! THAAAAAAAAAANK-YOU!!!! We still need Wednesday volunteers at recess, 9am-12pm help cutting out the math kits and crossing guard help in the afternoons. This is our first full week of school- let's get some good rest this weekend and prepare for engaging learning! Our teachers are ready!!

THIS WEEK'S Reading CHALLENGE: Find a favorite family recipe to read together. Bonus challenge: MAKE it together...and share with Mrs. Kidd! :)

MONDAY:

  • Kindergarten FIRST DAY! (Kinder students are out at 11am all week)
  • PE rotations begin! Students will rotate through Mindful Movement with Coach D and Adventure with Mr. Andrew each week. 4th/5th will also rotate through Conditioning with Mrs. Kidd and Dance/Drumming with Miss Deja. Ask your student about their experience.
  • COMMUNITY Mindful Sit @ 3:50pm- Join Coach D and our Staff this and each Monday for a restorative and reflective community gathering. Bring the whole family and a neighbor and meet in the auditorium for this community-building event.

WEDNESDAY: School is out at 1:30pm

FRIDAY:

  • Value Ticket Count- Which Grove is in the lead this week?
  • Friday School Emails sent home- let the office know if you haven't been receiving this important communication between us!

SATURDAY:

  • Farmer's Market in Downtown Ogden 8am-1pm

Requests:

  • Each student needs to bring their own pair of headphones to use at school this year. Please let your teacher know if you need any assistance with this request.
  • If you are interested in carpooling with other GreenWood families, you can manage this through your Compass portal following these instructions.
  • Mrs. Stewart would appreciate your help with the following art donations:
    • Black fine tip and ultra fine tip sharpies
    • Pink erasers
    • Glue sticks
    • Liquid glue
    • Washable markers
    • Paper towels
    • Cardstock paper (or any cool paper)
      (Also anyone's old acrylic paints will find a happy home in the art room.)
  • Cut out laminate for the math curriculum. 9am-noon Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Kinder parents, this is a supportive way to help us and be at the school during this week for you and your Kinder! :)

  • Help your student with their reading at home. We have adopted a schoolwide curriculum to support reading achievement with our students this year, and we need your help!

We are excited to tie this online reading support to class instruction, giving our parents a cooperating role in helping their student grow as a reader and make expected growth!

  • Students line-up @ 8:20am with their Crew Teachers on the lawn in front of the School to walk in to class as a Crew: Kinder to Early Grove on the East Lawn, Upper to Middle Groves on the West Lawn.

  • Crews walk out at 1:30pm with their Crew Teachers to greet their families. Please wait on the lawn and away from the entrances to the building. Early Groves Crews wait on the West Lawn, Middle and Upper Grove Crews wait on the East Lawn with their Teachers. BE PATIENT! This first week is a more congested time for pick-up, but as you meet families to carpool with, and trust in our system, this becomes more fluid through the year.

BACK TO SCHOOL- Aug 6-10

Back to School Night reminders- August 7th from 4 to 6pm.

  • 7th graders bring proof of 7th grade shot or exemption form. 7th & 8th Graders: Elective Class fees paid in the office (If you qualify for free lunch, you don't pay fees).
  • Bring any documents that the office has been requesting if you haven't already (birth certificate, immunizations, copy of IEP/504)
  • Fieldwork Chaperoning Paperwork: We need for each family to assist in chaperoning 1-2 fieldworks each year. To expedite the paperwork process, we will have forms available to take home and bring back at Back to School Night. We can also make copies of car insurance and driver's license that night so it doesn't need to be done later.
  • Sign-up sheets will be available to sign up for FCO schoolwide volunteer opportunities for those with multiple kiddos and those looking to serve outside the classroom.
  • Bring class supplies to classroom (General donations to the office).
  • Pick-up your student portfolio from your former Crew teacher and bring it to your new Crew.
  • Buy school t-shirts and "vintage" apparel and gear.
  • Fill-out Lunch paperwork. Pay on lunch and breakfast accounts.
  • We take Credit Cards in the Office.

  • Trailside Storytime! Join us on Tuesdays at 3:45. We'll wander out in the field, perch by a pond, climb into the treehouse, or find another fun outside nook, and read a storybook. This program is free for members! Open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Dress for the weather and join us!

SUMMERTIME Week 8: July 30- August 4

Here it is! Our last two weeks of Summer! How we have missed your beautiful faces!

Join us in meeting new families at our annual Family Campout, up the canyon at Willows Campground this Friday and Saturday.South Fork Campground complex is located approximately 5 to 7 miles east of Huntsville, Utah on Highway 39. Take 12th Street east through Ogden Canyon. Continue on Highway 39 toward Monte Cristo. The campgrounds in the complex are: Magpie, Botts, South Fork, Perception Park, Upper and Lower Meadows, and Willows in order from west to east. Each site has signs.

If you can't get away to camp, but can help us with a few school projects to "spruce-up" the school for a new year, meet us at 10am at the school to spread bark, dig out and replace 3 trees, and finish cleaning out our Upper Grove Meadow and Student Success room. We need 15 volunteers to rsvp to confirm before we order the bark and trees. Please help us! RSVP to mbiesinger@greenwoodcharter.org for us to plan on your help.

GreenWood SUMMER FUN:

  • GreenWood Family Campout- August 3-4th @ Willows Campground. First come/ First Served Campground. Come-up early and camp under the stars with fellow GreenWood families! Check-in times begin at 2pm, but if noone is in the site, you can occupy it anytime.

  • PE Boot Camp: Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am-11am! Activities include body weight workouts, running, jumping, balancing, strength and endurance building exercises. School Spruce-up Day is Saturday, August 4th @ 10am to help our school look it's best for our Teacher Trees returning to school for Teacher Week! We have 3 projects that need 3-5 volunteers for each:

  • Clean UG Meadow and Student Success classroom.
