Please know how much this school board loves our school and deeply cares for each of you. They are ever committed to building a supportive GreenWood community. We recommitted to our 3-dimensional work towards student outcomes celebrating our achievement towards this year's reading, school culture and high-quality work goals.

We exceeded our student high quality work goal by 10%, with an increase of 20% of proficient high quality work from Fall to Spring. 61% of students ended the year reading on grade level, with 3 Early Grove Crews growing over 10%! We exceeded our Value Ticket goal by 5000 tickets, but need to support increasing student attendance and parent volunteer hours for this upcoming school year. Our board volunteers many hours in support of our school mission and vision and keeps our achievement the focus of their work. Many thanks to these soulful volunteers: Stephanie Howerton, Jayme Nay, Gina McInelly, Chris Powell, Carey Lloyd and Greg Tarsa.

More Than We Thought Possible: June is a time to reflect on the incredible achievements of EL Education students and school communities over the past school year. From student-led conferences to end of year presentations, students in our network astounded us with their insights, ideas, and dedication to building a better world.

EL Education's approach to building citizen-scholars who are prepared to improve their communities is more important now than ever -- and the world is taking note. Recently, the work of EL Education and student activists from Polaris Charter Academy in Chicago were highlighted in this New York Times article on civic education. This year, our students and schools proved to the world that they are ready -- and able -- to make positive change. We salute our teachers and leaders for inspiring students to do incredible work on behalf of a better world.

SUMMERTIME Week 3: June 17-23: Happy Father's Day! Join us tomorrow night at the Dam to celebrate our Dads in a kayak or canoe. Reach out to Mr. Andrew if you need assistance,arevelle@greenwoodcharter.org. We are meeting at Pineview at 6pm!

Let's talk about being good listeners! We have a whole Summer to be with the people we love the most, which means more opportunity to practice our listening skills. Try these strategies from Diane Schilling, author of Simple Secrets of Happiness, for helping your family to be better listeners:

  1. Face the speaker and maintain eye contact. Talking to someone while they scan the room, study a phone or gaze out the window is like trying to hit a moving target. Square up and show the person your attention.
  2. Be attentive, but relaxed. The dictionary says that to attend another person means to be present, something we encourage as we practice mindfulness.
  3. Keep an open mind. Listen without judging the other person. Don't be a sentence grabber. Listen without jumping to conclusions.
  4. Listen to the words and try to picture what the speaker is saying. When it's your turn to listen, don't spend the time planning what to say next. You can't rehearse and listen at the same time. Think only about what the other person is saying.
  5. Don't interrupt!
  6. Wait for the speaker to pause to ask clarifying questions. Many people need more time to gather their thoughts before speaking. Giving the other person time to think about what they are saying helps them have another opportunity to clarify what they're trying to get across to you.
  7. Pay attention to what isn't being said. Face to face with a person you can detect enthusiasm, boredom, or irritation very quickly in the expressions around the eyes, the mouth, the slope of the shoulders, and fidgetiness, as we see often in our kids.
