GreenWood Families,

Thank-you for the well wishes in my behalf these last two weeks. I had surgery to remove a benign tumor from my pituitary gland. I am doing well and have been glad to get back to school to work with our amazing teachers and students, and you, our supportive families. We have lots to do in January! Thank-you for the support each time you read with your student, practice their math facts and feed them a healthy family meal! We love our GreenWood families!

Join us on Friday, January 25th for our annual Parent "Date" Night, here at the school. We will learn together with Aspen Florence-Henderson, our Behavior Specialist, strategies for talking with our students about some of the struggles that can happen during the school day- "bullying," hurtful words, friend dynammics. It is important to talk with our kids in ways that help them grow in their social and emotional learning. Let's learn how!

Our next new student lottery for next school year is open through January 30th! Share our enrollment link with friends and family interested in growing at GreenWood next year. We have openings in all grades Kinder-8th grade.

This week our students earned 2031 Value Tickets with Faiola's Crew winning with 426 Tickets, but Early Grove held the lead 1005 tickets this week. Our students have earned 34,693 TICKETS THIS YEAR!! Middle of Winter "blahs" and our students are still following our norms to be SAFE, RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and ENGAGED! Crews earned a READING PARTY with their hard work!

  • Wild Wednesday at the Nature Center (3:45 – 4:30pm): Rascally Rodents
    Imagine what it would be like to have teeth that never stop growing. Rodents make up 40% of all mammal species. Join an Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist as we explore the world of squirrels, mice, beavers and porcupines. Meet at the visitor center.
  • Saturdays at the Center: Who Was Here? (10 – 11:30am)
    While the fields are quiet in the winter, prints in the snow give evidence to hidden creatures. Join us as we discuss and practice different ways to track animals and learn about different ways they get around in the winter. Perfect for children ages 5-9

GreenWood Families,

We are excited to support the birding adventure tomorrow at the Ogden Nature Center beginning at 9am. We all get in free tomorrow! Monday, Miss Misty hosts our book party for students having met their December reading goals. Tuesday is our family luncheon for families who have already sent their RSVP- please no drop-ins as we have already ordered the food. Wednesday is our Service Day, beginning with our Awards Assembly at 8:15am for individual awards, and Celebration Crew at 8:30am for Crew Awards and our Thinking Creatively slideshow. Students are out at noon on Wednesday. Winter Break is from Dec 20- Jan 1st, with students returning on Wednesday, January 2nd.

Our findings will contribute to a world-wide database used by scientists and policy-makers.After the hike, you and your family are welcome to enjoy the rest of the Ogden Nature Center at your own pace.

We have had so much fun with your student this week! Thank-you to all our families who came and supported us at Fall Night. Check out our FaceBook page for pics from the fun night. Join us tonight for a fun night hike with Mr. Andrew and other adventurous "night owls." TONIGHT @ 7:30pm. We'll hike up Taylor Canyon again, this time under the cover of darkness. We'll enjoy the sights and sounds of the trail at night and stop at a meeting place halfway through to learn about the mechanics of night vision. Meet at the top of 27th street.Bring warm clothes, a cup for hot drinks, and a flashlight or headlamp.

  • Here comes the weather- put an extra set of clothes and shoes in the backpack this weekend to keep your student in school and learning in case of an accident.
  • Bring your Terracycles in to our bins out front of the school. This raises money for our school, and keep nonrecyclables out of the landfill.

This week our students earned 2035 more Value Tickets, with DeMars' Crew in the lead-picking a favorite Anima! song for our Friday send-off! Next week we kick-off our "GreenWood Gives Back" campaign to collect donated clothing, sleeping bags, canned and boxed food items. We ask that every student donate 1 item between now and Nov 1st during this season of giving! Donation barrels are in the Main Hall.

Requests:

  • As we approach the winter months, we need to build our list of substitute teachers to support our Crews. If you are interested in working as a substitute teacher, please contact the office for more information on pay, background check and hours.
  • Recess monitors are needed to support Wednesdays during lunchtime from 11:30am until 1pm.
  • Crossing support is needed in the mornings from 8:00-8:30am to help keep our students safe while our teachers prepare for their day and in the afternoons from 3:25-3:50pm to help with the flow of traffic as cars merge. Call Peggy in the office to sign-up to help for a morning and /or afternoon! We rely on you for help!

  • Harvest Festival FREE- You're invited to celebrate the harvest season at Thanksgiving Point's annual Harvest Festival Saturday, September 29th from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm! MISSION POSSIBLE: Wednesday is our first Forest Crew of the year, and our launch of this year's reading challenge: Mission Impossible. Students, teachers AND family members earn a leaf for every book they read, and for each weekly challenge they complete. Keep your students excited about reading, and be sure to add your leaf to our parent/family member reading bucket in the office. (Mrs. Stewart is working on a huuuuge tree for our Main Hall for us to grow with our reading leaves!)

  • We still need your help in creating our Math Kits. Cut out lamination on Tuesday Thursday and Friday this week from 9am-noon. Remember to sign-in the office to receive your volunteer hours.
  • Reading Horizons: Help your student with their reading at home. We have adopted a schoolwide curriculum to support reading achievement with our students this year, and we need your help!

Cultural Family Opportunities:

  • FREE Ogden Hispanic Festival- TOMORROW from 2PM - 8 PM for the third year in a row, the Ogden Hispanic Festival (OHF) will highlight the culture, history, education, music, dance, and gastronomy of the Latino community. Last year's event was a rousing success, with an attendance of over 1000 people. This year the event will be even more successful with an expected crowd of 1,500 to 2,000.This year's theme is "Civic Engagement & Culture, the Path to Education and Success." The OHF is a free event, open to the public, located at 2501 Wall Ave Ogden, Ut 84401.
  • FREE Utah Brazilian Festival- The premier Brazilian event of the year is coming to Orem (575 E University Pkwy) Saturday September 15th, 1-7PM. There will be food, dancing, a Samba parade and so much more! Bring a few dollars for food or to donate!
  • FREE Festa Italiana- On Sat Sept 9/15 12PM - 10PM, and Sun Sept 9/16 12PM - 7PM. A celebration of the culture, entertainment, and culinary diversity of Italy. Admission is FREE. During the two day festival, highlights include live Italian entertainment from Italy and around the world. Also enjoy, local food booths (15) highlighting the regions of Italian cuisine, Italian wine, arts & crafts, historical displays, live raffles, exotic Italian cars and much more.
  • Festival of India- On Saturday September 15th the Krishna Temple (8628 South State Road
  • Storytelling Night at Canyon Rim Park - Some say storytelling is the original form of entertainment. When humans first gathered around a camp fire, the art of storytelling evolved. Contrasted to those prehistoric nights, our storytelling night will be held in the safety of an outdoor amphitheater at Canyon Rim Park (3100 S 2900 E Salt Lake City, UT 84109) on Sept 16th at 8:15 PM Our storytellers will share a piece of their lives, allowing us to connect with the most precious human emotions. If you'd like to prepare yourself for stories, feel free to listen to "The Moth" storytelling podcast.
  • Fairytale Festival: Something magical is coming to Centerville, Utah! Back by popular demand, CenterPoint Legacy Theatre is pleased to announce the 6th annual Fairytale Festival to be held at the Theatre on September 14th and 15th, 2018.
  • A special music concert: Bonneville Chamber Music Festival designed for families and their developmentally disabled loved ones to enjoy themselves while listening to live music played by extraordinary musicians. The concert provides a welcoming environment for attendees to interact with artists along with a safe space for spontaneous vocalizations, hand flapping, rocking or other types of body movements from our autistic audience.

AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENTS NEED VOLUNTEERS! This is a reminder to all volunteers interested in teaching for our After-School Enrichment program that all course descriptions are due today! Please email Sarah Wilcox at swilcox@greenwoodcharter.org today (or tomorrow at the very latest) with your course description, including your name, course name, grade levels your course is for, number of students you can take (if less than 20), day you will teach, materials students will need if any, whether or not parents can participate, and a blurb for the course catalog.

It is looked forward to by people all across the state and attendees from neighboring states- the largest free custom car show in the Western United States with over 900 cars on display. Party Rock Project will be performing a free concert on Saturday, September 8th at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Street Stage.
  • Little Adventures Fall Outlet Sale- Little Adventures is having a SALE! Just in time for Halloween time! This year we will be doing two sales. A local sale in Sandy at the Mountian America Expo Center Sept 5-8.
