WEEK 36:  May 14-18

Supportive Parent Suns,

Here's to all of our PERFECT GreenWood Moms! :) I abandoned the idea and the chase of perfection long ago in pursuit of simple moments of eyes-opened noticing. With the arrival of my firstborn in 1998, I found joy in motherhood as I noticed her tiny toes, listened to her sweet coos, and now...years later, read of her soulful growth in her tender emails from her on the other side of the continent. Being a mom feels like an overwhelming responsibility until I remember the village of support I have from family, friends, neighbors and their school. I believe it takes a village, and at GreenWood, we have made this our constant: to build a community of support to both student and family, that we might find joy in the togetherness of our journeys. Join us tomorrow night- bring a friend, and let's share our stories of the glows, celebrations and joys in our journeys of motherhood! :)

Our end-of-year feedback survey begins tomorrow. Visit tetrastart.com to give us your input on the grows and glows of this school year to help us prepare for a great 4th year! Parent code: 322178

WEEK 35: May 8-11

Supportive Parent Suns,

This has been a wonderful week for our Teachers! We have felt of your love and support with each sensory day and each act of gratitude during this Teacher Appreciation Week as our Student Seedlings shared their 5 senses to share flowers, helpful acts, kind words, favorite colors, and healthy snacks. Thank-you to Sarah Powell for keeping our teacher break room filled with supportive surprises all week long!

We ended our week of appreciation by sharing in #betterworldday- an EL Education initiative that sprang up all over the country in our 150 schools. Thousands of students participated in community-building activities all with the belief that we get smart to do good, and EL helps us to do that good! We gathered together as a whole school in a special Forest Crew to celebrate the good we have accomplished this school year, including highlights from last week's Earth and Arbor Day projects of service. Later, our Upper Grove students volunteered with Volunteer Ogden to prepare the Ogden River Parkway trail for summer by trimming plants, clipping overhanging branches, picking up trash, and continuing the ever needed battle to combat that noxious Utah weed- Dyer's Woad! Our thanks to Mr. Andrew for coordinating this service efforts and for his dedicated efforts to help each day be a day to act as environmental stewards for our Student Seedlings and Teacher Trees.

Appreciation to our Garden Crew for their successful first PLANT SALE. We were able to sell nearly half of our commissioned plants, generating needed funds for our gardens. Thank-you to the dozen or so families who came and used their gardening dollar to build two gardens- one at home, and one at GreenWood!

I am looking forward to hiking with you next Monday. Some schools celebrate with muffins or song, but here at GreenWood, we value family time and want to celebrate our Moms in that special adventuring GreenWood way- in the mountains! We will meet at the 20th Street trailhead, and hike up the Birdsong trail. It's an easy 1 mile hike with plenty of greenery, beautiful views, and springs to snap a memory family pic. Meet at 6pm, and Mr. Andrew will lead us on a fun family adventure!

Remember, no school for the students, tomorrow. Our teachers will be visiting other EL schools, and planning end-of-year expeditionary experiences for their Crews. 4 more weeks of learning to groooooooow!!!

WEEK 34: April 30- May4

Supportive Parent Suns,

Thank-you for an amazing Earth Week, as we end our month of focusing on our HEALTH Value of Achievement! We loved having your support this week, including celebrating our students on Wednesday with our Recognition Assembly, Celebration Crew, and 4-5 Celebration of Learning. And with your volunteering and fieldwork support, Crews from all 3 Groves took the classroom outside to explore, study, celebrate, and provide service:

  • Kindergarten visited Sunshine Family Farm, a local beyond organic farm, to learn about trees. They studied the structure and life cycle of local tree species. Then, they got their hands dirty by helping the farm plant new crops for the summer such as goji berries.
  • 1st grade spent the week exploring birds through hands on lessons. Hawkwatch International visited our school on Wednesday to teach our students about the adaptations of cavity nesters. Our students met a tiny screech owl and placed a new kestrel box in the back seven to attract a nesting pair of birds this Spring. Then, on Friday, they learned the basics of birding at the Ogden Nature Center and hiked with Mr. Andrew to practice their skills. The first graders found geese, wood ducks, mallards, house finches, chickadees, starlings, red tailed hawks, and red winged blackbirds just to name a few.
  • 2nd graders started the week with a visit from a local butterfly expert, Todd Stout. Todd taught our students about mourning cloak butterflies and brought more caterpillars for us to observe in our classroom cages. On Friday, 2nd grade visited the USU Botanical Center to explore the interconnectivity between pollinator plants and animals. After dissecting flowers and learning how different species aid in pollination, the students beautified the Center's trails by clearing them of trash.
  • Middle Grove celebrated with a 4th/5th grade field day at Harrisville Park. The students enjoyed the sunshine, played games, and made reusable snack bags to cut down on the amount of plastic waste we bring to school. 3rd grade headed out to our back 7 to repair and clean our beautiful tepees.

And next Friday, our Upper Grove students will visit the Ogden River Parkway with Ogden City's volunteer coordinator to prepare the trail for summer by trimming plants, clipping overhanging branches, and picking up trash.

THIS Saturday: GreenWood Mother's Day Plant Sale: 10-2pm in the Greenhouse: The plant sale held by Greenwoods Garden Crew will help to fulfill the mission to boost our community school garden with supplies and tools for students to keep growing healthy food! It will provide funds for the greenhouse and other projects to continually improve and increase the amount of fresh healthy produce we are able to grow. In addition, we hope to purchase plants and supplies to begin working on our food forest in the back lot. Summer gardening sign-ups will be available at our event and an opportunity for families to purchase a plant for our school! March 25

GreenWood Families,

Let's talk EMOTIONS! Emotions can come on strong, making it difficult to think or respond. This is especially true when it comes to anger or fear. Students can have strong visceral reactions—their hands can get clammy, their heartbeat can quicken, they can get aches, and they can feel heat rising in their body. All of this can make it extremely hard to think and focus during class.

Helping students pause and notice the sensations in their body and then reorienting their attention can help them settle and create enough space to manage their emotions and the sensations they're feeling. Try this 4-3-2-1 strategy from our friends at Mindful Schools to help students navigate strong emotions. In this activity students use their sense of sight, hearing, and touch as well as their breath to ease any sense of overwhelm they might be feeling. Tell students when they notice a strong emotion taking hold in their mind and body to:

  • FOUR: Find four blue or green objects in their surroundings and take a couple of breaths when they've found them. Reorienting their focus can help them settle and blue and green are considered soothing colors.
  • THREE: Shift attention and notice three sounds outside of the space they're in. Do they notice kids talking, birds chirping, wind blowing, or people walking?
  • TWO: Shift attention and notice two sounds inside the room and continue to be mindful of the breath. Do they hear any sounds they hadn't noticed before?
  • ONE: Place one hand over the chest and/or belly. Do they feel their heartbeat or their breath moving through their body?

After completing the activity ask your child to notice other sensations in their body. Are their palms sweaty? Has their breathing slowed or the heartbeat evened out? If they still notice strong sensations associated with the emotion they're feeling, they can repeat the exercise until they feel ready to move on. Play with this and let us know how it works in your family?

The weather is looking good for our Family Night at the Ogden Adventure Park, tomorrow night. Bring a blanket and a picnic at 6pm. Games begin at 6:30! Let's keep learning by pausing before we engage in a conversation with our children during this last learning week of March- WEEK 30!!

Greenwood Boosterthon Fun Run 2018: Parents! Who is ready for the FUUUUUUUUUUUN Run??? I know our students are!!! This year's main fundraiser is the Greenwood Boosterthon Fun-Run! It's a 9-day program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on April 9, 2018. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we'll celebrate at the Fun Run on April 18, 2018. With our big goal of raising $30,000 for next year's expeditions, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun.
Students will also experience an amazing character theme, CASTLE QUEST! an English castle theme all about being brave and living with character. On their quest to regain Bravemore Castle, students will learn the "SIX VIRTUES of a TRUE HERO" from a cast of colorful characters. All families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support!
