Expeditionary Learning

At GreenWood, we will partner with Expeditionary Learning to implement a school development model of learning that promotes excellence through collaboration across 5 dimensions of school improvement: curriculum, instruction, assessment, leadership and character. This model gives students a hand-on approach to learning through exploration. We will work with EL to develop a strong academic program through a supportive school culture based on the 10 Design Principles. Our teachers will work with a trained School Designer to develop curriculum, share teaching strategies, and grow together with their teaching Grove

EL Education partners with schools and districts and provides educational resources to teachers across the world in service of an expanded vision of student achievement. We believe that when a student is done with school and enters adult life, she will be judged for the rest of her life not by her performance on tests of basic skills, but by the quality of her work and the quality of her character. Our vision of student achievement therefore has three dimensions: Mastery of Academic Skills and Content, High-Quality Work, and Character.

Environmental Stewardship

A supportive learning environment is key to growing our "seedlings." Our students will learn to be mindful of themselves so they can connect with others, their learning environment and their outdoor experience. Our Teacher Trees will support Seedling Students to grow to achieve their academic goals and feel a sense of connection and responsibility to the world. Within a climate of collaboration, community, character and compassion, our students will learn to connect their choices to consequences that impact their social, emotional and physical environment. We will foster learning that imagines a better world and support student works toward realizing it. We will work with our students to set high academic standards, promote creativity, discovery, reflection and balance. Environment is more than connecting with the outdoors—it is mindfully developing a sense of self to connect with others in a meaningful. We want our students to feel a sense of connection and responsibility to the world.

GreenWood students will receive a rigorous education. Our curriculum will be aligned with the State of Utah Core Curriculum standards. Our goal is to exceed both state and federal testing standards. We will have strong programs in place to facilitate student-centered learning in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Health & Nutrition, and Physical Education. All of this will be encompassed by a daily focus on health, nutrition, physical fitness, and environmental awareness.

Green School Yard

At GreenWood, we want our students to stay connected to nature. Our school yard will be designed to let students explore and play in a natural environment that supports their learning, growth, and development. Our playground will consist of natural materials and will incorporate obstacle courses, climbing areas, balance beams, forts, digging areas, and large open areas for outdoor classroom activities. Our goal is to get the students out and enjoying nature while having fun. To read the 2010 article in USA today regarding Natural Playgrounds, click here.
