The school is founded by local parents, professionals, and health educators who all share a passion for helping children succeed in all areas of life. Core Values

Our Motto: "Educating The Whole Child" Healthy Habits – We know that to have a bright mind we need to have a healthy body. We practice math and reading, eat lots of fruits & vegetables with our family and friends, actively exercise and speak positive words. We develop self-control through will power as we resist urges, fears, and peer pressure. We practice mindfulness to focus and think before we act. We are mindful. Environmental Stewardship – We know our choices have consequences. We conduct every interaction honestly. We set intention. We commit to act. We reflect on growth and the impact of our decisions. We safeguard the environment and create positive change within our communities. Our commitment to the greater good transcends personal concerns. Our work has value. We are grateful. Achievement – We know that to succeed, we need to know how we fail. Knowing ourselves first, we focus on growth with an open mindset. My ability and competence grow with my effort. We ask questions that solve authentic problems. We strive to surpass yesterday's accomplishments, and prepare diligently to excel in every arena. We have the confidence to compete when success is not assured. We persevere in the face of challenge, and view every failure as the basis for a future success. We objectively analyze past experiences to improve our knowledge. We are passionate about excellence. We have grit. Leadership – We assume personal responsibility for achieving extraordinary results, but we know we accomplish more when we work together. We are accountable to each other to focus on growth and the greater good. We work every day to build integrity by doing what we say we are going to do. We have trust for each other. We believe we can succeed at any challenge. We are optimistic. Thinking Creatively – We hunger to know more, and remain committed to continuous learning. We are driven to learn, to teach, to uncover the secrets of the natural world, and to expand the body of knowledge. We encourage and reward innovation and industry. We greet new ideas openly and optimistically. We know positive thinking will build a positive school. We have zest. Honoring Diversity – We each belong to this community and have compassion and respect for others. We value conclusions drawn from the rigorous analysis of data and not merely from popular opinion. We develop the social intelligence necessary to embrace the diversity of people, perspectives, and ideas. We value honest relationships, communicate openly, and support each other. We collaborate for success, drawing on each other's complementary strengths and skills. We care. WE SET INTENTION. WE COMMIT TO ACT. WE REFLECT ON GROWTH. At GreenWood, we seek to educate students in the areas of mind, body, and soul. Having academic capability alone does not necessarily constitute a well-rounded individual, and therefore, we have our 6 HEALTH Values to develop habits of scholarship in each of our students Student Seedlings realize that effort of mind and body are necessary for success. Seedlings know that collaboration and responsibility are integral parts of all work. Seedlings are self-regulated and attuned to their own progress in all of life's situations. Seedlings recognize that each person has positive attributes, and they live with integrity and self-respect: Healthy Habits I can make choices that are helpful to me. I can be accountable for my choices. I can do be mindful. Environmental Stewardship I can make decisions that show appreciation for others and our space. I can leave no trace. Achievement I can persist through a challenge. I can show determination and can work hard. I can produce quality work. Leadership I can do what is right. I can help others. I can set a good example for others. Thinking Creatively I can think about new ideas. I can solve problems. I can create. Honoring Diversity I can work well with others. I can show respect for others. I can consider other ideas.

Our Story of the GreenWood Tree

The next time you see a tree, you might stop to consider why GreenWood selected this as its symbol and mascot. When we first looked for a property to build our physical space, we found this beautiful 12 acre farm in Harrisville. Reaching out to us, with its strong, inviting limbs was a lone tree, growing out of a tin shed used for holding irrigation pipe valves. While it was obvious this tree was not planted with intention, the tree grew and grew to become the tree we saw standing at the front of this farm. This tree stood for the growth we wanted to support in every GreenWood Student and Teacher. 1. Trees always grow toward the light. And that is why we need you, our families to support our growing forest of trees and seedlings with your light. You are our sun and will brighten our path and support our way with your care and radiance. We know our students have the power to soak in as much sunlight as possible to promote photosynthesis—the process of converting light energy into chemical energy, to produce amazing fruits of work! We nourish and encourage all light until it grows clear, bright, and true 2. Trees grow stronger through adversity. Removing of the competition for water, sunlight, and soil nutrients, doesn't help trees, it weakens them. the chosen trees would be released to grow and develop in extraordinary ways. Trees have to recover from various forms of adversity—a lightning strike, a powerful gust of wind, a heavy accumulation of snow or ice, the encroachment and abuse of careless humans, and sometimes the aggression of a neighboring tree. We know bad things can happen to students, but at GreenWood, we will support our students through these times and help them develop a growth mindset that will help them release and grow in extraordinary ways! 3. Trees grow best in forests, not in isolation. In nature it's unusual to see a tree standing alone. Trees almost always grow in groves, and over time these become forests like the one we hope to grow at GreenWood. Our multi-age program socially supports the interconnectedness of our students interacting and developing a synergy as they rely upon one another to grow together! "We know that "thinning" a forest weakens every tree- every tree is needed to grow a healthy forest. We know we can accomplish more together than we ever could alone! 4. Trees draw strength from the nutrients created by previous generations of trees. People, like trees, who share a common direction and sense of community can grow more easily supported by the work of trees before it. Forest fires, drought, harsh winters all can be difficult times for the tree, but with the fertile bed of previous tree growth, a tree can withstand these difficulties, and continue to grow.
